Jason and I have been discussing so many things wrong with the world lately. There have been some tragedies in our area and ward that have lead us to think about how scary this world can be to raise our kids. How do you protect them from outside influences and the actions of others? How do you teach them correctly? How can you help them overcome difficulty and challenges? It can be a daunting and overwhelming thought to the point that you might think there is no hope.
Fortunately for us we have divine inspiration given to us twice a year in general conference. How many times have we heard from our leaders that it is a hard and scary time, BUT it is a wonderful time too. They give us hope with their words. They give us the direction and guidance to help us with these challenges.
There was a great talk that I really enjoyed by Elder Donald L. Hallstrom. Here is just a short paragraph summarizing the talk:
"If you feel you have been wronged—by anyone (a family member, a friend, another member of the Church, a Church leader, a business associate) or by anything (the death of a loved one, health problems, a financial reversal, abuse, addictions)—deal with the matter directly and with all the strength you have. “Hold on thy way” (D&C 122:9); giving up is not an option. And, without delay, turn to the Lord. Exercise all of the faith you have in Him. Let Him share your burden. Allow His grace to lighten your load. We are promised that we will “suffer no manner of afflictions, save it were swallowed up in the joy of Christ” (Alma 31:38). Never let an earthly circumstance disable you spiritually. "
I loved that last sentence. I think it says it all. We can't give up. Things may seem dismal, but we have the Lord on our side.
