Making Ice Cream

Yipeee!!! Yesterday was the last den meeting for a while (we're taking a month or so off for the summer). Not that I don't absolutely love my bear scouts, but hey, I need a break. Most of the boys will actually be leaving into Webelos in the next couple of months. So, in celebration of their moving on, we had a little ice cream party.

We made ice cream in cans. It turned out really good actually. The boys thought it was really cool to make their own ice cream by rolling it on the floor. Breanna especially liked it. I'm pretty sure that Breanna has earned both her wolf and bear badges along with Joshua. She does everything he does, so we like telling her she has earned the awards too.

Joshua has officially moved to Webelos so he wasn't rolling the ice cream, he was off playing with his legos I believe. Here is a picture of Breanna rolling the ice cream.

For those who are interested, here is how you make the ice cream. You need a small can (we used baby formula cans) and a large can the size of food storage cans. In the small can put 1 pint half and half, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 tsp vanilla or 2 Tbs chocolate syrup (we made both flavors). Put lid on and duct tape around the lid. Put the small can in the large can with crushed ice and plenty of rock salt all around the small can until full. Put a lid on the large can and duct tape that too. Then just roll the cans back and forth for 20 minutes or so. The ice cream is a bit soft, but really yummy.
